Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help keep your chimney cleaner.

Seasoned vs. Green Wood

Seasoned firewood is wood that has been dried for at least six months, reducing its moisture content. This type of wood burns more efficiently and produces less creosote, a sticky residue that can accumulate in your chimney flue. In contrast, burning green wood releases more smoke and moisture, leading to quicker creosote buildup.

When selecting firewood, look for pieces that are gray and cracked with loose bark, indicators that the wood is well-seasoned. Burning seasoned wood not only reduces maintenance but also increases heat output.

Hardwoods vs. Softwoods

Hardwoods, such as oak, maple, and hickory, are denser and burn longer and hotter than softwoods like pine or fir. This makes hardwoods a preferred choice for home heating as they produce more heat and less creosote.

While softwoods can be excellent for kindling due to their easy ignition, relying on them for extended burns may result in quicker buildup of tar and less efficient heating. Opt for a mix of hardwoods for better performance and a cleaner chimney.

Proper Storage

Storing your firewood correctly is crucial in maintaining its quality. Stack wood at least a few inches off the ground to avoid moisture absorption and cover the top with a tarp, leaving the sides exposed for airflow.

Properly stored firewood will continue to dry out, enhancing its burning efficiency. Avoid storing wood in large piles against the house, as it can attract pests and retain excessive moisture.
